MHS drowns SSHS, 9-2 in boys soccer
Defending champions Marianas High School Dolphins drowned out Saipan Southern High School Manta Rays, 9-2, in the NMIFA-PSS Interscholastic Boys High School Soccer League 2024-2025 last Monday at the NMI Soccer Training Center in Koblerville.
The nearby ocean’s roar seemed to echo through the pitch with the tidal clash of the league’s top two teams. After the matchup, they are both tied with a 3-0-1 record each.
The Dolphins surged ahead early on as Takeru Jim whiplashed one past the goalie just three minutes into the game. However, the tide died down on both sides with no goals let through until the 25th minute. The Dolphins’ Tyler Omelau doubled their lead as he sliced through SSHS’ defenses with the precision of a dorsal fin cutting through waves.
But the Manta Rays finally got on the board three minutes later from Monico Claridades, making it a close 1-2 game.
They then navigated through the pitch like a ship stuck out on a stormy sea—both sides struggling intensely for possession and the upper hand. The Dolphins then found some net as the sun dipped below the horizon and employed high-pressure tactics that became a feeding frenzy of three back-to-back goals—all within six minutes for a 5-1 lead.
From there, the Dolphins didn’t let up as Omelau completed his hat-trick in the 53rd minute, then followed it up with his fourth goal just four minutes later—bringing their lead up, 7-1. Before SSHS could even score their second goal, MHS’ Paul Lizama made it 8-1 in the 65th.
The only other goal SSHS could reel in was by Anthony Austria in the 67th. The ninth goal by MHS was made just a minute from a hat-trick by Lizama for a 9-2 final.
In other results that day, Saipan International School JV blanked MHS JV, 2-0.
Last Tuesday, SIS V overpowered MHS JV, 9-0; and Kagman High School Ayuyus outgoaled Mount Carmel School, 13-3.
