MHS slips past SSHS to win boys soccer title

MARIANAS High School’s varsity team clinched the boys high school division title of the NMIFA-PSS Interscholastic Soccer League by edging Saipan Southern High School, 1-0, on Tuesday at the NMI Soccer Training Center in Koblerville.

It was a true championship match as both teams filled both halves with nail-biting back-and-forth action.

In the first half, MHS played the role of the aggressor as they were in control of most of the possessions. The footwork of Anthony Bergancia, Mark Costales, Brian Lubao and Jerald Aquino kept SSHS on their toes as MHS repeatedly broke through the defense with well-timed cross passes to create several shot opportunities.

But SSHS’ defense proved to be formidable as they successfully protected their end of the turf.

Like MHS, however, SSHS failed to score in the first half which ended in a 0-0 tie.

After just a few minutes of play in the second half, the rejuvenated MHS players picked apart SSHS’ line to create an opening for Brian Lubao who found the back of the net at the 36th minute mark to give MHS the lead, 1-0.

SSHS tried to even the score, but they failed to get any clear shots and had to settle for defeat.

Third place

In the battle for third place, Saipan International School defeated Mount Carmel School, 2-0.

After a scoreless first half, SIS finally built enough momentum to go on the attack with Ian Song and Casey Chambers connecting separate shots at the 29th and 43rd minute marks to secure the win for SIS.
