Soccer: Shirley’s, MPU notch wins in Dove Women’s League

SHIRLEY’S Football Club and MP United Football Club won their opening matches Saturday in the intermediate division of the Dove Women’s League-2022 spring season at the NMI Soccer Training Center. Against Paire Football Club, Shirley’s established control as soon as the whistle was blown, penetrating PFC’s line of defense with Jhaza Cruz scoring the game’s first goal. Six minutes later, another goal was scored by Shirley’s Kathryn Sablan. PFC managed to tighten their defense and stop the bleeding for the remainder of the first half. They eventually slipped through enemy territory where they forced the foul with Pyper Liske-Clark capitalizing on the penalty kick at the 27th minute mark to cut Shirley’s lead 1-2. After the halftime break, a rejuvenated SFC unleashed an offensive assault. Cruz ignited the run with her second goal of the day followed by another goal two minutes later by Mikky Vargas as their team seized a 4-1 lead. Liske-Clark scored at the 42nd minute mark but the rest of her PFC team mates were unable to contribute. Shirley’s, for their part, squeezed in one more goal at the 55th minute mark after Angelica Carreon found the back of the net to win the match, 5-2. MP United vs Kanoa In the other match of the night, MP United Football Club edged Kanoa Football Club with a late-game goal. After a scoreless first half, MPU broke the ice as their persistence gradually overwhelmed Kanoa, creating an opening for Moriah Sablan who delivered at the 48th minute mark. There was enough time for Kanoa to equalize, but MPU stood their ground to secure the win, 1-0.
