Great players don’t just react — they think ahead.
This week, our players focused on anticipating consequences and learning how to make better decisions both on and off the field. Through our “finding space” drill, players worked on moving around a crowded circle, looking for open space, and calling for the ball while teammates passed from the inside to the outside.
The activity challenged them to stay aware, communicate, and decide their next move before the ball even reached them — just like in a real game.
We connected this skill to real-life decision-making by talking about how every choice has a result. Whether it’s facing pressure from defenders or pressure from peers, thinking ahead helps our players avoid risky situations and make choices that support their goals.
Because just like in soccer:
If you don’t think first, you run into pressure.
If you think ahead, you find space and create opportunities.

The Play Smart, Live Strong initiative by the Northern Mariana Islands Football Association empowers our youth to make healthy choices on and off the field. Together with the Saipan Soccer School After School Program, we are using the power of soccer to promote substance-free lifestyles and reduce the risk factors related to underage drinking and marijuana use.
Every week we will share about our practical lessons, group discussion highlights, and soccer skills we learned to support our players as they Play Smart, Live Strong!
