Sleep is our superpower. Proper sleep powers our performance!

This week, our players learned that being their best on the field starts with something many people overlook: getting enough sleep.

Before training, we talked about how sleep helps athletes react faster, stay focused, and perform at their highest level during games. Soccer is a fast-paced sport that requires quick decisions, sharp concentration, and plenty of energy from the first whistle to the final minute.

Players discovered that while we sleep, our bodies are hard at work. Sleep helps restore energy, rebuild muscles, and strengthen the skills we practiced throughout the day. We also discussed how alcohol, marijuana, and other harmful substances can interfere with quality sleep, preventing the body from properly recovering and increasing the risk of injuries and poor performance on the field.

We finished the session by putting our focus and reaction skills to the test through fun soccer activities that challenged players to stay alert, make quick decisions, and execute their footwork under pressure.

The Play Smart, Live Strong initiative by the Northern Mariana Islands Football Association empowers our youth to make healthy choices on and off the field. Together with the Saipan Soccer School After School Program, we are using the power of soccer to promote substance-free lifestyles and reduce the risk factors related to underage drinking and marijuana use.

Every week we will share about our practical lessons, group discussion highlights, and soccer skills we learned to support our players as they Play Smart, Live Strong!
