This week’s discussion reminded players that great athletes know when to push and when to reset.
Together we discussed:
- Why rest helps muscles recover and grow
- How staying hydrated keeps your body performing at its best
- Why healthy food fuels recovery
- Simple habits like limiting screen time before bed
- How managing the pace in soccer helps players stay ready for the next play
Players also discovered that alcohol and marijuana don’t improve rest—they actually reduce the quality of sleep and recovery, making it harder to stay focused, energized, and game-ready.
Through a fun drill, players practiced controlling the pace of play, showing that smart decisions help teams perform better from the first whistle to the last.

The Play Smart, Live Strong initiative by the Northern Mariana Islands Football Association empowers our youth to make healthy choices on and off the field. Together with the Saipan Soccer School After School Program, we are using the power of soccer to promote substance-free lifestyles and reduce the risk factors related to underage drinking and marijuana use.
Every week we will share about our practical lessons, group discussion highlights, and soccer skills we learned to support our players as they Play Smart, Live Strong!
